Crotchet Club

Year 12 Semester 1 Evidence and Reflections:

LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth. Students are able to see themselves as individuals with various abilities and skills, of which some are more developed than others.

In this activity, my strengths include organising group elements such as when we meet up, what style we are doing and how big the squares are. However, as I was not the most confident and experienced person in the group at crocheting, I let my friends such as Kim and Yuting make the final decisions.

LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process. A new challenge may be an unfamiliar experience or an extension of an existing one. The newly acquired or developed skills may be shown through experiences that the student has not previously undertaken or through increased expertise in an established area.

Once my friend Claudia taught me how to crotchet I was able to do it alone, however, when I began I had trouble starting the inner circle, remembering the pattern and how many loops until the corner and angle change. After practicing many times, I was able to improve in these areas and become more confident in completing crotchet squares.

LO3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience. Students can articulate the stages from conceiving an idea to executing a plan for a CAS experience or series of CAS experiences. This may be accomplished in collaboration with other participants. Students may show their knowledge and awareness by building on a previous experience, or by launching a new idea or process.

Through crotchet club, I have been able to initiate and plan a CAS experience. Firstly, the group had to decide on an idea that would allow us to fulfil the CAS criteria as well as make a difference in our community. Once this was achieved, we organised the wool, design and final product. As no one had done this before, launching a new idea was exciting and I am glad that I chose to undertake this activity.

LO4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences. Students demonstrate regular involvement and active engagement in CAS.

Our crotchet club meets every Friday lunch for an hour. Additionally, I crotchet in my own time a couple of times a week for at least 20 minutes before I go to bed.

LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognise the benefits of working collaboratively. Students are able to identify, demonstrate and critically discuss the benefits and challenges of collaboration gained through CAS experiences.

Through this activity, I was able to recognise the benefits of working collaboratively with my friends. For example, I was able to make new friends with the girls involved in this activity as generally I do not see them. Collaboration also increased my ability to be flexible and compromise as sometimes not everyone was available to meet up, however, we were patient and adaptable to solve these problems. Therefore, I recognised and improved my problem solving abilities through my ongoing participation in crotchet club.
